Whats In A Name?
· From the 2010–2013 blog
Fuck! This is starting to drive me nuts! I am wasting so much time trying to name this tool/business/whatever - because I need to start networking a little bit, I need to give people business cards, I need to incorporate, and I need to launch the first draft public website - and I'm blocked on all of those because I am nameless. Now, on the flip side of the coin, I kinda do like being nameless. We still have options, we aren't living with a bad name, we can let brilliance strike us. but lately I've been investing a ton of time in encouraging the brilliance - and more or less its been all for nothing. I don't even have a short list of names that are potentials. just an endless stream of circular ideas and their associated vetos. I think tomorrow I'm going to spend some time creating a google doc with a shortlist, rankings, and the criteria. but for those of you curious who you go about naming a web 2.0 company - the guidelines I've been following are (in rough order of importance):
- People can spell the name
- Must have an availible .com domain
- Currently no strong google results for the name / name is different (low density of similar names)
- People can guess what we do / The name is logically connected
- It can be used as a verb
- Max length of 8 characters
- Doesn't start with x or z for spelling reasons
- First letter is early in alphabet
Hopefully the eureka comes soon! but if it doesn't and you have a good idea, by all means send me a msg and I'll get back to you. also on the plate is more tornado an event loop stuff.
