The Tribal Village

· From the 2010–2013 blog

Not that anyone reading this would disagree, but we have been around for about a quarter million years as a species. we looked mostly the same, albeit hairier, and our brains were mostly the same size, though we might have done less with them. we wake up everyday and deal with lots, and lots of things that have only existed in the last couple of years. things that have existed for less than 50 / 250,000 years of our evolution. no wonder we suck at driving, and typing, and are scared of flying. we have spent almost 100% of our evolution as a species in 50 person tribal villages, where we all had a very specific role to fill. now the question I want to ask is, who were you in this 50 person tribal village? Before you answer lets think about the make-up of our village. there is a roughly even split of men to women, so you are 1 in 25 of your same sex. we are from a tribal village that respected its elders so 4 are elderly (back in the day this was probably age 25+, but for these purposes treat it as 50+), we have children and adults left, lets say 12 children (ages 0 - 12), and 9 adults (ages 13 - 25). so far we know you are 1 of ~9 people in our ancestral village. in our village the children and the elders all have roles, but we are less concerned with who they are, I want to talk about the adults, and the males in particular. 2 of these adults are probably misfits, they are the odd ducks that still exist today. they work for the better of society but are removed from it at the same time. 4 of them are average, they aren't part of the inner circle, but they aren't misfits. they work hard, mate and provide children progressing the tribe through the millennium. 3 are in the inner circle; they are the generals and council to the tribal leader. they are his closest friends and advisers. they are the scheming, manipulative co-workers that seem to always capitalize and benefit in your workplace (and they are good at it after 1/4 million years). and lastly there is the tribal leader, he is charismatic, he carries a big club and he is either the smartest, the strongest, or the most defended male in the tribe. And now I want your answer, who are you? think about your group of friends, your life circle. are you the first one to pickup the rock and start the fight, or the council, or even the misfit? are you the wife of the chief - manipulating the whole of the tribe, or otherwise in the inner circle? are you better at fighting or scheming, or just putting your nose to the stone and working hard? after 1/4 million years I don't think there is a wrong answer - but i think there is power in knowing who you would be in your tribe. power in working with your 250,000 years of training towards your tribal destiny. I know who I would be, and it has helped me understand most of my failed relationships business and personal. it helped me understand my circle of friends and why i keep them, and what I need to do, to be successful in this life time.
