Hacking On The Go
· From the 2010–2013 blog
Its quite a different thing hacking on the go. Not having a cubicle or a place you're supposed to be from 9-5. Its both great and terrible. you don't need to be anywhere, which means you can work everywhere. but you need to be the eyes in the back of your head forcing yourself to get shit done. I've been traveling the last few days. and I'm writing this on the bus right now. hacking on my mac air over my iphone tether. and while that sounds really cool, and like an unnecessary use of technology when the guy beside me is doing fine with a magazine, its kinda necessary. I cant lose a day. I dont get days off. when you're fighting for your life, and running a shoestring budget like I am, every-time you eat, or buy a bus ticket, you know that you just lost a little bit of that precious runway. and just just cant eat without doing a little work. and if you're lucky enough to eat everyday, then you gotta work every day! So here I am. on a bus. compiling boost, installing scribe, making a Django app for metrics and writing a blog post. So far I've been pretty good about my productivity - I'm happy with the amount of sleep i get (I've been kicking my ass to get up after 7hours), the amount of work I'm doing (somewhere around 14hours a day, 100 hours a week), and my so far very respectable attempt at avoiding distractions. I get a little better at working from home everyday. and things like escaping to Toronto to sync with Mike seem to be helping my focus (as opposed to wasting my time). The big things for this weekend are:
- Forcing Mike & Steve to sign-off on our JS architecture
- Getting myself up to speed on the JS development so far, and open tickets
- Setting up Jira on Mikes new server (with a local DB)
- Setting up DB sync between Mike's house and unit21.ca
- Getting Mike up to speed on the Python development so far
- Setting up and starting the trackadge of metrics
Its gonna be a busy few days. Time I get back to the hacking at hand.
